Part II: Anxiety, Fear, and Control
Exploring how anxiety relates to fear, and how fear in turn relates to control, both in our personal lives and in the wider collective experience.

You are welcome to attend either gathering or join both. Each session can be attended independently, though participating in both is encouraged.

“Anxiety strives to become fear because fear can be met by courage.”

Anxiety is not a singular experience. Many of us who do not fit into neat diagnoses, or who do not have help available, find ourselves either wondering if there is something fundamentally wrong with us, or functioning as a shell of who we sense we can or ‘should’ be. Even those who seek and receive help may feel something lacking.

Together, we will explore:

  • What is the difference between anxiety and fear?

  • Why does this feeling push us to avoidance, paralysis, or excess of preparation and perfection?

  • Could anxiety be a response to a lack of control or certainty in our lives? Could it have a purpose or value?

Like an unwelcome house visitor, anxiety makes itself at home, and in the pressure to survive its arrival we often miss the opportunity to question why it arrived to begin with. When we are in a burning house, it does not help (in that moment) to ask why it is on fire. Our nervous systems are wired to escape danger. With the safety and distance afforded by gathering in a group, we will explore these questions and delve deeper into how we relate to, understand, and respond to anxiety.

This is part two of a group dialogue around the experience of anxiety. The first part focused on medical classification, treatment, and management techniques, and with this follow-up we will take the conversation further and open up what it means to experience anxiety. We will explore possible roots of anxiety, what it may be seeking to communicate, and how we can live with, as opposed to eliminate, this all too familiar feeling.

Even if you missed the first talk, please feel free to join if this discussion calls to you. We will not spend much time on definitions but instead delve deeper into the experience of anxiety and how it relates to fear, control, existence, and nonbeing. The pace and direction will be determined by you in the group, so please do not feel any prior knowledge is needed. I invite all to come with an open mind and a curious soul.

This talk will not be group therapy, but instead an exploration in a group setting, where we will support one another in how we understand, meet, and reframe one of the most prevalent and disabling experiences of our time.

Host

Ciarán (Keer-awn) is a medical doctor working with medicine-assisted therapy. He has a background in psychiatry, and training in Celtic shamanism, EMDR and energy therapy. His work is inspired by Carl Jung, world mythology, and existential (meaning-seeking) philosophy. He continues his journey to decolonise his mind and rewild his soul, while holding an open heart for the world in suffering.

In Ciarán’s work, he holds space for the soul and genius of each individual. This can be understood as the wider and deeper aspect of oneself, that seeks to find expression in life and grow into a fuller sense of being. It is our deeper sense of self that it often dismissed, devalued, and disregarded in the rush and pressure of modern society and culture. Returning to soul is to come home in your being.

Please note that tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by us.
