WE ARE THE BEST! is one of the best films about punk, adolescence and female friendship made in recent years. Set in Stockholm in 1982, it follows Bobo and Klara, two thirteen-year-olds who refuse to accept that punk is dead, then pull the shy and churchgoing Hedvig into their orbit and turn boredom, conviction and teenage restlessness into a band. Lukas Moodysson adapted the film from Coco Moodysson’s graphic novel NEVER GOODNIGHT, and the result feels intimate, specific and close to the textures of ordinary teenage life.

Punk here isn’t a backdrop or a style reference. It is the girls’ way of testing themselves, pushing against the world around them and turning frustration into sound. That comes through especially strongly in their own song, “Hate the Sport!,” which the young cast helped write with Moodysson. The song is blunt, funny and exactly right for girls of that age trying to invent themselves through noise and attitude. Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne give the film its energy, and the soundtrack roots it in a real musical world rather than a vague idea of punk.

WE ARE THE BEST! is also very funny, but never in a patronising way. It stays close to the chaos and sincerity of being young and making something with your friends before you really know how. It captures the embarrassment, excitement and small acts of defiance that give teenage life its shape, and it does so with warmth, humour and a real feel for how music enters your life before you fully understand what it means.
