Villarosa Sequences
Thomas Jennefelt

Aleidi floriasti — Saoveri indamflavi — Villarosa sarialdi — Strimoni volio — Claviante brilioso — Virita criosa — Vinamintra elitavi

These seven movements form a dense, richly textured musical work that creates a unique atmosphere—one where the words blend with the music as if by magic, even though they carry no literal meaning; where shifting colours of light enhance but never distract; and where the listener is free simply to be in the music without needing to understand or interpret it.

Thomas Jennefelt (b. 1954) is one of Sweden’s most prominent composers of contemporary music, whose work is characterized by a particular focus on the voice and its expressive possibilities.

Jennefelt’s music is distinguished by expressive dissonance, intense choral textures, and a text-centered vocal approach. He gained international recognition early on with his work Warning to the Rich (1977), whose success paved the way for his subsequent influential role in contemporary music.

While Arvo Pärt’s work creates a meditative space where every word serves as a structural element of the music, and Krzysztof Penderecki uses the choir as a multi-layered orchestra to explore the extremes of the sound world, Thomas Jennefelt approaches sound as a medium and creates an entirely new sonic landscape where the choir becomes a distinct, an independent, mystical instrument in its own right.
