VAGABOND is film #14 in FOMO’s extended Women in Film Week, a program built around female performance, female subjectivity, and the many ways women’s stories are written, performed, directed, and brought to life on screen.
Agnès Varda’s VAGABOND closes Varda Wednesday with the discovery of a young woman’s body in a ditch. The film then retraces the final weeks of her life through fragmented encounters with people she passed along the way. Each account offers a partial view, but no single explanation.
Sandrine Bonnaire plays Mona as distant, stubborn, and unwilling to conform. Varda avoids sentimentality and refuses to turn her into a symbol or a victim. Instead, the film builds a portrait through absence, contradiction, and the limits of what others can understand about a life lived on the margins.
The structure draws from documentary method, but the result is something colder and more confrontational. It asks what it means to reject stability, and at what cost.
WHY IT’S INCLUDED IN THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM: We’re showing VAGABOND because it refuses to make its central character legible or sympathetic on demand. Varda allows Mona to remain opaque, resisting the expectation that women on screen must be explained, redeemed, or understood. That refusal is central to the film’s power.
