Weird Fishes: Alisa Khazanova, Maria Bolshova, Vasilii Zorkii

Arc London

We have conceived our first serious project within the field of theatre.

On February 20, we will present an immersive reading titled Night Conversation.

This is a new theatrical format developed as part of the Arc Theatre Laboratory. Its core idea is that we do not stage a traditional play, but rather perform a film script, placing the audience inside the action — inside the film itself. At certain moments, the reading transforms into cinema, which we watch immediately on screen.

The entire action takes place in a single apartment over the course of one evening.

The project involves three performers and one camera operator. The operator films the actors live and projects the image in real time onto one of the walls of the space.

The script’s author and director is Vasiliy Zorkii — playwright and director, author of the productions Country Moscow at the Meyerhold Centre and I Am 30 at the Gogol Center; nominee for the André Malraux Literary Prize; recipient of a Special Jury Mention at the Kinotavr Film Festival; and winner of the Golden Eagle Award for Best Screenplay.

The script Night Conversation was selected among the pitches for the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn and also won a grant from the URST programme.

The piece is a long nocturnal conversation between two Muscovites and a woman who has lived in Berlin for twenty years. It is a conversation about differing worldviews, double standards, history and democracy, inner beliefs, and what makes us human. After the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, this conversation sounds entirely different — revealing new meanings and exposing us from an unexpected perspective. It is a dialogue about the structure of society and where that structure has led us.
