KIDS is presented as part of our extended Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.

Few films capture the raw energy of the 1990s American independent film movement quite like KIDS. Directed by photographer Larry Clark and written by a nineteen-year-old Harmony Korine, the film follows a group of teenagers wandering through New York City over the course of one summer day. Skateboarding, house parties and casual encounters form the backdrop to a story that gradually reveals the darker realities of adolescent life.

Clark cast mostly non-professional actors drawn directly from New York’s skate scene and shot the film with a loose, documentary-like approach. Conversations feel overheard rather than scripted, and the camera moves through the city with the restless energy of the characters themselves. Among the young performers were Chloë Sevigny and Rosario Dawson, both making their screen debuts here before going on to become major figures in independent cinema. Sevigny would later become one of the defining actresses of the indie movement, working with filmmakers such as Harmony Korine, Jim Jarmusch and Lars von Trier.

Produced outside the traditional studio system and distributed independently, KIDS quickly became one of the most controversial films of the decade due to its frank depiction of teenage sexuality and drug use. Yet its influence on independent filmmaking was undeniable. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and helped launch the career of Harmony Korine, who would go on to direct GUMMO and other cult independent films.

Nearly three decades later, KIDS remains a defining work of American independent cinema, a film that confronted audiences with a world rarely shown on screen and refused to soften its edges.
