Guillermo del Toro | 2025 | Mexico/USA | 2h29m | English audio and subtitles | 10-minute intermission
FRANKENSTEIN sees Guillermo del Toro return to literary adaptation, offering a faithful and emotionally grounded interpretation of Mary Shelley’s novel. Rather than leaning into horror spectacle, del Toro centers the story on grief, isolation, and moral responsibility.
Set in early 19th century Europe, the film follows Victor Frankenstein’s obsessive pursuit of scientific transcendence and the tragic consequences of his success. Del Toro reframes the monster not as a creature of terror, but as a being defined by abandonment and longing. The emotional gravity of the relationship between creator and creation drives the film’s tension.
Del Toro’s lifelong fascination with monsters as outsiders finds its most direct expression here. The film draws heavily from gothic romanticism, European expressionism, and classical tragedy, favoring atmosphere, production design, and psychological complexity over shock.
FRANKENSTEIN becomes a meditation on ambition, authorship, and moral accountability. It examines the human desire to conquer death, and the ethical vacuum that emerges when creation outpaces responsibility.
