Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN is presented as part of our extended Independent Film Fest at FOMO Secret Cinema, Tbilisi, showcasing the best emerging filmmaking talent from across the globe.
After several years working inside the Hollywood studio system, Alfonso Cuarón returned to Mexico to make a film on his own terms. Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN follows two teenage friends, Julio and Tenoch, who persuade an older woman named Luisa to join them on a spontaneous road trip across the Mexican countryside in search of a mythical beach they call the “Heaven’s Mouth.” What begins as a carefree adventure gradually reveals tensions beneath the surface of their friendship, their class differences, and the country they are traveling through.
Working with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, Cuarón adopts a loose, observational style that allows the film to drift between personal story and social portrait. A calm, reflective voiceover quietly introduces moments the characters themselves barely notice: passing villages, political demonstrations, roadside tragedies. Through these fragments, the road trip becomes a portrait of Mexico at the turn of the millennium.
Produced outside Hollywood and made with a modest budget by Cuarón’s own production company, the film represents a deliberate return to independent filmmaking after the director’s studio projects. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival and went on to become one of the most internationally celebrated Mexican films of its generation, launching the careers of Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.
Today Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN stands as one of the defining examples of modern Latin American independent cinema, a film that blends intimate storytelling with a wider portrait of a nation in transition.

T&Cs: guests must enter the Bazari by 23:00 to gain access to the FOMO Cinema Lounge Bar. If the Atoneli St entrance is locked you can get in via the side entrance on Sulkhanishvil St between 21:00 and 23:00. We close at 02:00 each evening.
