Yorgos Lanthimos | 2025 | Ireland | 1h58m | English audio and Subs
BUGONIA marks Yorgos Lanthimos’ return to controlled, clinical absurdity, blending psychological thriller, social satire, and existential paranoia.
The story follows two conspiracy obsessed men who abduct a powerful corporate executive, convinced she is not who she claims to be. What begins as a delusional act of resistance gradually exposes deeper patterns of power, belief, and moral collapse. As reality fractures, certainty becomes impossible.
Lanthimos constructs tension through ritualized behavior, emotional detachment, and rigid social choreography. Dialogue is sparse, movements precise, and framing deliberately alienating. Humor and dread operate side by side, generating an atmosphere of constant unease.
BUGONIA examines how paranoia becomes a coping mechanism in systems that appear opaque, hostile, and indifferent. It reflects a world in which belief replaces evidence, and suspicion substitutes for meaning. The result is a film that is both darkly comic and deeply unsettling.
