Group Discussion - Men and Porn - By Cecilia

Tirsdag 13. mai klokken 19:00 - 21:00

Mashti Community, Oslo

In this new event series, Creating Shame-Free Pleasure, we focus on our relationship to porn.

On May 13, we’ll host an open space for men to share their feelings and experiences with porn freely and without shame. This event is open to men and non-binary people only, to ensure a safe and supportive space where participants can express themselves and ask questions. A future discussion will be dedicated to women and non-binary people.

Some estimates suggest that around 80% of men have accessed porn at some point. For many boys, porn becomes their first source of information about intimacy and sex. Yet the use of porn is often surrounded by shame. Anti-porn feminists have portrayed men who consume porn as complicit in the oppression of and violence against women, while conservative groups have condemned porn for encouraging non-procreative sex and threatening the family as a fundamental social unit.

As a result, many men develop a complicated relationship with porn, where feelings of pleasure and guilt, among others, become deeply intertwined.

At this event, we aim to create a space where men can openly share and discuss their experiences with and feelings about porn. This will be a group discussion rather than a panel, offering an honest, shame-free environment where no judgments will be made.

Bring your guilt, your worries, and your pleasures, and let’s air them out together.

Cecilie is an anthropologist and a feminist, currently completing a PhD at the University of Oxford, where she has focused on masculinity, marriage, and the gendered division of labour in the Pakistani middle class. She also has a Master’s degree in Gender Studies from SOAS, and has worked with gender issues in the socialist left in Norway as well as while running a farm and a school for many years in Pakistan. Although originating in Norway, she has spent half her life in other countries, resulting in a transnational life and identity. She is dedicated to creating a gender equal society, and believes that it is important to work with men, and to understand their lives and experiences, to achieve this.
