LOST IN ARCHAIC MUSIC

What might archaic improvisation be like?

How can we connect with our own voice and with fellow singers by improvising together, while creating a harmonic texture through minimal use of notes and various folk singing techniques?

How can we tell a story without words?

In this vocal workshop, we will improvise personal and collective stories, focusing on simplicity of pitch, emotion, and the older (archaic) traditions of Finnish folk music. We will explore what kinds of sounds and nuances can be produced from the voice using only a few notes, drawing on different folk singing techniques, and aim to create and tell stories in which the sense of musical time or duration loses its meaning. I will also present the kinds of forms that can emerge when these techniques are applied in the hands of a contemporary folk musician. Welcome to join with open ears and open heart.

BIO

Päivi Hirvonen is a Finnish folk musician, singer, and fiddler known for blending traditional Nordic sounds with contemporary influences. She has gained recognition both as a solo artist and as a member of groups like Okra Playground, showcasing her skill in violin, vocals, and songwriting rooted in Finnish heritage.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: This workshop will be held in English, but the workshop facilitator speaks Finnish and is happy to translate in case that would be an obstacle.
