In this event we will explore identity and what it means to be "queer". Homosexuality is - by definition - related to sexuality and sex, but queerness goes far beyond that and so we want to dive into the question of what it means to be queer outside of who you sleep with. Queerness is political, is community, is breaking norms, so what do we really mean when we ask someone if they are queer?
The term "queer" originated as a word to describe those outside the norm who are perhaps a little odd or strange, and was soon adopted as a descriptor of homosexuals, with that lifestyle not being widely accepted in many societies. And as these things often go, it then became a slur to spread homophobia. But some still found a home in the word, and a community with it, and in recent years it's developed a kinder spin and a less hateful meaning. But are homosexual and queer interchangeable, or are they two separate identities?
This will be a group discussion format led by intimacy coordinator Imogen Noble, who shifts between the label "queer" and "lesbian" depending on the crowd. We encourage you to bring your questions and opinions on the topic, but mostly to bring an open mind to explore the topic together.
This talk is connected to our private Queer Play Party at Mashti Community on 11.09. Whether you already have a ticket, are curious about the party and want to learn more, or simply want to join the conversation, you’re warmly welcome.
The Queer Play Party itself is open to members of our private group where we post our sex-positive events. If you’re not yet a member, attending this talk will give you the opportunity to join the group and get access to the event.
Come with an open and curious mind, to listen, ask questions, connect, and get to know our community.
Host
Imogen originally comes from the UK, but has spent the majority of her adult life living and loving in Oslo. She is a trained intimacy coordinator for film and TV, working with consent, safety and intimate choreography for screen. Fascinated with all things relational, she uses a large part of her time reading up on sex, relationships and human connection. She is non-monogamous, queer, sex-positive and kinky, and uses all of these identities to inform her work, allowing for a multifaceted approach to intimacy. Through Mashti Community events she hopes to help people explore these different forms of intimacy and push the boundaries of what it means to be "normal" in a world full of differences.
Please note that tickets are non-refundable unless the event is cancelled by us.
