Mourning Sociality: Bemoaning Masculine Fragility with Raoni/Muzho Saleh

A ceremonial gathering initiated by Raoni/Muzho Saleh centered around a momentary collective body that expresses grief through the shared practice of moaning and
groaning.

Date: 19 okt
Time: 14:30 - 18:00
(with a light meal afterwards)
Capacity: maximum 15.

This specific iteration of Mourning Sociality takes place within the sculptural installation by Chupan Atashi, and is an invitation to those who embody, have embodied, or are curious about masculinity— including those who identify as male (trans or cis) or who have been socialized in relation to masculinity, to linger in the grief caused by a patriarchy that socialises masculinity as imposing and oppressive. Within a held container, the aim is to break with the fragility of oppressive masculinity through the affective, liberatory practice of moaning and wailing together.

The invitation to vocalise sigh and whimper, and to offer a listening ear to the moans of others, builds solidarity through the vulnerability of the individual and the strength of the collective. In this space we play with grief as a psychosomatic spiritual experience that is always political; expressing it collectively creates space for embodying other worlds.

Raoni/Muzho Saleh facilitates the entire session, providing a framework for the gathering. He uses somatic practices that include both simple movement and sound exercises. The emphasis of this gathering lies in playing and play-acting with the experience of grief. While Raoni will tend to everyone in the workshop, participants are invited to take responsibility/agency for what arises for them. We will learn how to listen and receive the moaning calls of others through the membrane of our skin and to locate what this listening opens up within us.

Participating in this session requires no prior experience with movement and sound. A light meal will be offered afterwards.

Capacity is limited, this is an intimate gathering for a small group of participants. Please RSVP, and notify us through [email protected] in case you’re unable to attend. A few days before the event an e-mail will be sent with further details.

Please note: This programme takes place in the exhibition space. We regret to say the exhibition space is not wheelchair accessible due to the restrictions of our space.

Raoni/Muzho Saleh is a Hazara/Dutch artist using performance, installation and the sound of mourning and moaning to twist and reshape narratives of (cultural) becoming. His work's focus is to play with the personal, social and political peripheries. Engaging the entanglement of body, spirit, politics and love within art through the use of materials such as movement, voice, text and textile, his works are temporary immersions —for both performers and the public— into otherworldly thinking, feeling and relating.
