Join us for an upcoming edition of Culture Club in collaboration with the Bijlmer Bookstore, a local gem created by sisters Nathifa and Zuwena Elshot to bring stories from the Black and African diasporas to the heart of the Bijlmer.
Together, we’re hosting a Book Exchange, an open invitation to share the stories that have moved you, and discover new ones that might. Bring a book (or a few) to exchange with others, explore our collective tables of titles, and browse a special selection of books for sale curated by both Metro54 and the Bijlmer Bookstore.
Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just beginning your reading journey, come spend the afternoon surrounded by books, ideas, and community. Families, friends, and chosen kin of all ages are welcome!
About Bijlmer Bookstore:
The Bijlmer Bookstore was founded by sisters Nathifa and Zuwena Elshot, both born and raised in the Bijlmer. Their mission: to make space for books by Black and African diasporic writers — from fiction and poetry to theory, cookbooks, and children’s stories
About Culture Club:
The Culture Club offers a range of art classes, reading clubs, scavenger hunts and panel talks which inspire creativity, stimulate ideas and connect people of all ages to engage and create. In connection to our current exhibitions and programs, the Club transforms itself into a space for toddlers, kids, tweens and teens to play, be curious, read, connect and make together. We believe that the process of being creative together is just as important as the art we make and bring into the world. Using art as our tool, we facilitate a range of intergenerational activities responding to the changing needs and wants of communities which include well being, collective (un)learning and community building. The M54 Culture Club is an invitation to parents, friends and grandparents to join art classes with their toddlers, kids, tweens and teens and adult children. Chosen family and siblings are welcome to connect over shared love for critical engagement with art and culture. Or to join our reading club about history and urgent societal themes. Our scavenger hunts will allow for a more physical approach to engaging with art and culture in the historical neighborhood where Metro 54 is located.
